I think Descartes was mistaken. He was obviously a great thinker, but never did come to terms with the dualistic nature of thought itself. He stopped at ‘I think therefore I am’ but never asked ‘who or what is the ‘I’ that is thinking?’. Therefore he stopped in the ‘illusory desire realm’. For more on that question, see Ramana Maharishi and Nisigardatta Maharaj.

By the way, have a look for a book called ‘The Shape of Ancient Thought’ by Thomas McEvilly. This has detailed comparisons between Greek and Indian philosophy. It is pretty enormous (700pages+) but is great to dip into.

If you like Heraclitus, you should seek out a book called The Aristos by John Fowles. Hard to come by, but extremely good.
