I came across this quote of Einstein’s while reading the book Catching the Light, The Entwined History of Light and the Mind, by Arthur Zajonc. (Prof. Zajonc is a Prof. of Physics at Amherst College and studies quantum optics.)
All the fifty years of conscious brooding has brought me no closer to the answer to the question, What are light quanta? Of course every rascal thinks he knows the answer, but he is deluding himself.

Zajonc asks the question:

What is the nature of this invisible thing called light whose presence calls everything into view – excepting itself?

The prospect of growth is as much a prospect of loss, and threat to security and bounty. One must die in order to become. Newly won capacities place us in a tumult of new psychic phenomenon, and we become like Odysseus shipwrecked in a stormy sea. Like him we cling tenaciously to the shattered keel of the ship we originally set out upon, our only and last connection to a familiar reality. Why give it up? Do we have the strength to leave and change? Perhaps the voices encouraging us to venture out on our own belong to the cruel Sirens? So we close our eyes, and hold to what we know.

I believe that all things are simple and all things are complex. It is a matter how you view it.
